How To Host The Ultimate Fourth of July Party

Nothing says summer like a little 4th of July fun with family, friends and, of course, fireworks! If you’re hosting this year’s party, but your spark to get prepared hasn’t yet been ignited, there is still time to make your party shine like… well, the 4th of July!

For Independence Day celebrations, we embrace the casual, backyard BBQ; so, there is no need to worry about the formalities that sometimes can come along with hosting a dinner party. Instead, we’ve compiled a list of five last-minute tips to help make your 4th the brightest on the block:

1. Embrace the Obvious Theme: There is no better time than Independence Day to sport your red, white and blue. Not only can you feel free to don your most patriotic outfit, you can (and should) match your party décor to our stars and stripes. Remember, Memorial Day wasn’t too long ago so, you already may have a jump on your patriotic party supplies. If not, your local grocery store likely carries red or blue plates and they absolutely have white napkins. When time doesn’t seem to be on your side, improvise!

2. Minimize the Menu: If you’re feeling a little behind and overwhelmed about your 4th of July BBQ menu, take a step back and simplify. Everyone loves burgers and dogs, but if you feel the need to bring out your famous BBQ sauce, slap it on some ribs or chicken and toss them on the grill. Quick, traditional sides like macaroni or potato salad will be welcomed by one and all and a fruit salad filled with watermelon, strawberries and blueberries will help add to your patriotic color theme. For a twist, consider asking your guests to bring their favorite side to your party. They’ll likely ask what they can contribute anyway.

3. Get into the Games: Adding a little friendly competitive spirit to your 4th of July backyard BBQ by having plenty of games will surely keep your guests entertained. Again, you don’t have to get fancy to have some fun. Backyard volleyball, horseshoes and pool games are classic go-to crowd pleasers. And, if you haven’t caught on to the cornhole trend yet, the 4th of July is the perfect time to get in on the action. You can easily find any of these games at a local Walmart, Target or other department store. They’re easy to set-up and fun to play, too.

4. Perfect a Playlist: If backyard games aren’t quite your style and you think your guests would rather socialize than exercise, make sure you’ve got the perfect patriotic playlist to keep your Independence Day guests grooving. Now, you don’t have to keep Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” on repeat, but we can all admit that we do love hearing it on the 4th. Play everything from Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” to Katy Perry’s “Firework” and you’ll be sure to have something that everyone can enjoy.

5. Stock Up on the Essentials: By now, you’re likely getting into the 4th of July spirit and probably feeling ready to party. Make sure that your bash lasts long after the last firework goes off by keeping some extra party essentials on hand. Here, we’re talking about ice for the coolers, charcoal or propane for the grill and plenty of cold beverages to help beat the heat. Of course, you can’t forget your standard supply of sparklers, poppers, smoke bombs or other at-home fireworks for the young and the young at heart.
